Form 2290 calculator: what your heavy vehicle use tax is
A truck over 75,000 lbs that was on the road in July 2026 owes $550.00 for July 2026 to June 2027, and that return was due August 31, 2026. If your truck first went on a public road later, pick that month below: one first used in October owes $412.50, due November 30, 2026. Source: IRS Instructions for Form 2290 (Table I and the due-date chart), retrieved Oct 25, 2026.
Due August 31, 2026: the last day of the month after the month you first used it. If the truck ran on public roads in an earlier month this period, use that month.
That date passed 55 days ago. If you haven't filed, file now: late penalties add about 5% of the tax for each month late, plus interest.
Category V, non-logging, first used July 2026. One truck.

Questions
How much is 2290 tax for a semi truck?
$550.00 for the full year, July 2026 to June 2027, for a truck over 75,000 lbs taxable gross weight (Category V); $412.50 for a logging truck. A truck first used after July pays less: one first used in January 2027 owes $275.00.
When is Form 2290 due?
By the last day of the month after the month you first use the truck on a public road. A truck on the road in July 2026 was due August 31, 2026. Due dates for every first-use month.
How long is a 2290 good for?
One tax period. "The current period begins July 1, 2026, and ends June 30, 2027." Each July starts a new period and a new return, whatever month your plates renew.
Can I file Form 2290 on IRS.gov?
No. "You cannot e-file your Form 2290 on IRS.gov. You must use one of the participating commercial software providers." You can also mail the paper form if you report fewer than 25 vehicles. E-file fees we checked start at $6.95: e-file prices.
Do I need to file Form 2290 for a box truck or hotshot?
Only at 55,000 lbs or more: "Highway motor vehicles that have a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more are taxable." Taxable gross weight is the empty truck, plus the empty trailer, plus the heaviest load you usually carry. A box truck rated 26,000 lbs is under it; a truck and trailer that reach 55,000 lbs together are not.
