Is my ELD still registered?

FMCSA's lists dated Oct 24, 2026 hold 936 registered devices and 387 revoked ones: 132 revoked by FMCSA and 255 withdrawn by their makers. FMCSA calls listed devices registered (people often say approved); providers self-certify them. Source: FMCSA registered list, revoked list.

New revocations: the RSS feed adds an item for each device that lands on FMCSA's revoked list.

Before you act on a "revoked" result, open FMCSA's revoked list and match the device name and ELD ID exactly. A provider's other devices, or a newer version, can still be registered. This is a copy of FMCSA's list from Oct 24, 2026.

Do I need an ELD at all?

A truck rated 10,001 lbs or more running interstate is a commercial motor vehicle (what applies at each weight), and its driver needs an ELD unless one of these exceptions fits:

"A motor carrier may require a driver to record the driver's duty status manually in accordance with this section, rather than require the use of an ELD, if the driver is operating a commercial motor vehicle: (1) In a manner requiring completion of a record of duty status on not more than 8 days within any 30-day period; (2) In a driveaway-towaway operation in which the vehicle being driven is part of the shipment being delivered; (3) In a driveaway-towaway operation in which the vehicle being transported is a motor home or a recreation vehicle trailer; or (4) That was manufactured before model year 2000, as reflected in the vehicle identification number as shown on the vehicle's registration."

49 CFR 395.8(a)(1)(ii)(A)

"A driver is exempt from the requirements of §§ 395.8 and 395.11 if: (i) The driver operates within a 150 air-mile radius (172.6 statute miles) of the normal work reporting location; (ii) The driver, except a driver-salesperson, returns to the work reporting location and is released from work within 14 consecutive hours;"

49 CFR 395.1(e)(1), which also requires 10 hours off between shifts and 6 months of time records

A device that malfunctions isn't an exception: the carrier "has 8 days to repair, service, or replace the ELD" (FMCSA ELD FAQ). A revoked device has its own deadline: what to do when an ELD is revoked.

What FMCSA requires

"A motor carrier required to use an ELD must use only an ELD that is listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's registered ELDs list."

49 CFR 395.22(a)

"Motor carriers have up to 60 days to replace the revoked ELDs with a compliant ELD."

FMCSA revocation notices, ELD News and Events

"No. Consistent with its approach to other investigations, FMCSA will not publicize ELD investigations. Should an ELD investigation result in a device being deemed a noncompliant device, then that device will be listed on the ELD revoked list."

Questions

Is my ELD FMCSA approved?

Type its name or ELD ID in the search box. FMCSA calls listed devices registered rather than approved, because providers self-certify them. If yours is on FMCSA's registered list dated Oct 24, 2026 with the same ELD ID shown on your screen, you can use it. The list holds 936 registered devices.

Where is the FMCSA approved ELD list?

FMCSA publishes it at eld.fmcsa.dot.gov/List, with the revoked devices on a separate list. This page searches both, and the data downloads give the same lists as CSV files with revocation and replace-before dates.

Do box trucks and hotshots need an ELD?

Yes, if the truck or the truck and trailer together are rated 10,001 lbs or more and run interstate, unless an exception fits: logs on 8 days or fewer in 30, a truck built before model year 2000, driveaway-towaway, or short haul within 150 air-miles with release inside 14 hours.

How long can you use paper logs after an ELD malfunction?

The driver tells the carrier within 24 hours, and the carrier "has 8 days to repair, service, or replace the ELD" (FMCSA ELD FAQ). A revoked ELD runs on a different clock: the replace-before date in FMCSA's notice.

How many ELDs has FMCSA revoked?

FMCSA's revoked list dated Oct 24, 2026 holds 387 devices: 132 revoked by FMCSA and 255 withdrawn by their makers. In 2026 so far FMCSA revoked 56 and makers withdrew 46. The revoked ELD list has every one, dated.
