My ELD was revoked: what to do

FMCSA's notices give carriers up to 60 days to replace a revoked ELD with one from the registered list, and set the exact date in each notice. Source: FMCSA notice of Aug 6, 2026, ELD News and Events.

Every step below is quoted from FMCSA's notices. Your device's own notice is linked from its page in the ELD check, so read that one too. The deadline is the day before the date in the notice: FMCSA says to replace the device "before" that date. Longer read: the 60-day rule, explained.

What FMCSA tells carriers to do

  1. Right away

"Discontinue using the revoked ELDs and revert to paper logs or logging software to record required hours of service data."

  2. Before the date in the notice

"Replace the revoked ELDs with a compliant ELD from the Registered ELDs list before [date]." Check any replacement in our ELD check or on FMCSA's registered list.

  3. On or after that date

"Motor carriers and drivers who continue to use the ELDs listed above on or after October 6, 2026, will be in violation of 49 CFR 395.8(a)(1) - "No record of duty status" and drivers will be placed out-of-service in accordance with the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) Out-of-Service Criteria." (Wording from FMCSA's notice for its Aug 6, 2026 removals.)

  4. If the provider fixes it

"If the ELD provider corrects all identified deficiencies for their devices, FMCSA will place the ELDs back on the list of registered devices and inform the industry and the field of the update."

Paper logs: the 8-day limit is for breakdowns

Drivers on trucker forums ask whether paper logs are allowed for more than 8 days. The 8 days come from the malfunction rule, for a registered ELD that stops working. For a revoked device, FMCSA's notice sets the date, and paper logs or logging software are what it tells you to use until then.

"The driver must inform their carrier of the malfunction within 24 hours. The motor carrier has 8 days to repair, service, or replace the ELD."

FMCSA ELD FAQ, on malfunctions

If the provider withdrew it

Some devices are on FMCSA's revoked list as "self-revoked": the maker pulled them. FMCSA usually publishes no notice for those, but sometimes it names a withdrawn device in a removal notice too (AirELD ARELD1 in February 2026), so check your device's page. Either way the device is no longer registered, and the general rule says which devices count:

"A motor carrier required to use an ELD must use only an ELD that is listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's registered ELDs list."

49 CFR 395.22(a)

If your device shows as withdrawn, don't count on 60 days. Ask your provider which registered device or version replaces it, and check that one before you switch.

Questions

How long do I have to replace a revoked ELD?

Up to 60 days. Each FMCSA notice sets the exact date, and the device has to be replaced before it. In the Aug 6, 2026 notice that was Oct 6, 2026, 61 days later.

What happens if I keep using a revoked ELD after the deadline?

Drivers are put out of service. From FMCSA's notice for its Aug 6, 2026 removals: "Motor carriers and drivers who continue to use the ELDs listed above on or after October 6, 2026, will be in violation of 49 CFR 395.8(a)(1) - "No record of duty status" and drivers will be placed out-of-service in accordance with the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) Out-of-Service Criteria."

Can I use paper logs while I replace it?

Yes. FMCSA's notices tell carriers to stop using the revoked ELD and use paper logs or logging software until it is replaced. The 8-day limit people quote is the malfunction rule for a registered ELD that breaks down.

What if my provider withdrew the device instead of FMCSA?

It is still off the registered list, and FMCSA usually publishes no notice or grace period for a withdrawn device. Ask the provider which registered device or version replaces it and check that one before you switch.

Can a revoked ELD be fixed and reinstated?

Only by the provider. FMCSA: "If the ELD provider corrects all identified deficiencies for their devices, FMCSA will place the ELDs back on the list of registered devices and inform the industry and the field of the update."
