A worked example: new truck, first used in October 2026
Say you buy a tractor in October 2026 and pull a loaded trailer at 80,000 lbs. Here is how the IRS rules turn that into a number and a date.
| Step | What the IRS says | Your answer |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | Taxable gross weight is the unloaded truck, plus the unloaded trailers you usually pull, plus "the maximum load customarily carried" (IRS) | 80,000 lbs: category V (over 75,000) |
| First-use month | The month the truck is first used on a public highway in the tax period | October 2026: 9 months of tax |
| Tax | Table I of the instructions prorates the $550.00 annual tax by month | $412.50 |
| Due | "Form 2290 must be filed by the last day of the month following the month of first use." | November 30, 2026 |
| Next July | The new period starts July 1, 2027; trucks in use in July file by August 31 | Full-year return for 2027-28 |

How much is 2290 tax for an 80,000 lb truck?
$550.00 for a full year, because anything over 75,000 lbs is category V, the top of the table. The amount drops by about $45.83 for each month later that the truck first goes on the road:
Lighter trucks pay less. The table starts at $100.00 at 55,000 lbs and adds $22 for each 1,000 lbs up to 75,000. A few rows:
| Category | Taxable gross weight (lbs) | Full year | First used Oct |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 55,000 | $100.00 | $75.00 |
| E | 58,001 – 59,000 | $188.00 | $141.00 |
| J | 63,001 – 64,000 | $298.00 | $223.50 |
| O | 68,001 – 69,000 | $408.00 | $306.00 |
| T | 73,001 – 74,000 | $518.00 | $388.50 |
| U | 74,001 – 75,000 | $540.00 | $405.00 |
| V | over 75,000 | $550.00 | $412.50 |

When is Form 2290 due?
By the last day of the month after the month of first use, moved to the next business day when that falls on a weekend or holiday. For a truck already running in July, that is August 31. The IRS is clear that your plate renewal date has nothing to do with it: "The filing deadline isn’t tied to the vehicle registration date."

What is Schedule 1, and why does the DMV want it?
Schedule 1 lists each truck's VIN and category. Once the IRS accepts your return, the stamped copy is your proof of payment, and states ask for it when you register or renew a heavy truck. If you e-file, "You'll receive your watermarked Schedule 1 from your e-file provider via email after we accept your Form 2290." (IRS).
Can I file Form 2290 on irs.gov?
No. "You cannot e-file your Form 2290 on IRS.gov. You must use one of the participating commercial software providers." (IRS). The IRS lists 151 approved providers for tax year 2026; the cheapest single-truck price we confirmed on a provider's own page was $6.95 (E2290S.COM, checked Oct 24, 2026). Prices are on our 2290 e-file prices page. E-filing becomes mandatory at 25 or more taxable vehicles on one return, so a one-truck carrier may still mail a paper return.
You need an EIN, not your Social Security number, and the IRS asks new filers to "allow four weeks for your new EIN to be established in our systems before filing your Form 2290" (IRS). If you are setting up a new authority, apply for the EIN first.
My truck runs under 5,000 miles. Do I still file?
Yes. You file and report the truck as tax-suspended, category W, and owe $0. The limit counts public-highway miles for the whole period: "Mileage use limit means the use of a vehicle on public highways 5,000 miles or less (7,500 miles or less for agricultural vehicles)" (IRS). If you go over, the tax comes due: "File the amended Form 2290 and Schedule 1 by the last day of the month following the month in which the mileage use limit was exceeded." The tax is figured from the truck's original first-use month, not the month you crossed 5,000 miles. More on this at suspended vehicles.
What does filing late cost?
The 2290 instructions don't print penalty rates. The IRS's general rules apply: 5% of the unpaid tax for each month or part of a month the return is late, up to 25%, and 0.5% a month for paying late. In a month when both apply, the filing penalty is cut by the payment penalty, so the two add up to 5%. Interest is not included below. On the $412.50 example:
| Filed and paid late by | Failure to file | Failure to pay | Penalty on $412.50 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 month | 4.5% | 0.5% | $20.63 |
| 2 months | 9% | 1% | $41.25 |
| 3 months | 13.5% | 1.5% | $61.88 |
| 5 months | 22.5% | 2.5% | $103.13 |
| 6 months | 22.5% | 3% | $105.19 |
| 12 months | 22.5% | 6% | $117.56 |

If you had a real reason for being late, the instructions say to "send a letter to the IRS explaining why you believe you have reasonable cause for filing late or paying late." An extension to file must be requested in writing before the due date, runs up to 6 months, and does not give you more time to pay (IRS). Chart and details: 2290 penalties.
Can I get 2290 tax back?
In three cases, claimed as a credit on line 5 or a refund: the truck was sold, or destroyed or stolen, before June 1 and not used again that period; or it ran 5,000 miles or less (7,500 for farm trucks) in the period you paid for. The low-mileage credit only comes after the period ends: "For a vehicle that was used 5,000 miles or less (7,500 miles or less for agricultural vehicles) during the period, a credit for tax paid can be claimed on the first Form 2290 filed for the next period." (IRS).

Questions
How much is 2290 for a truck first used in October 2026?
$412.50 for a truck over 75,000 lbs, due November 30, 2026. The full-year $550.00 drops by about $45.83 for each month later that a truck first goes on the road.
Do I need an EIN to file Form 2290?
Yes; a Social Security number won't work. The IRS asks new filers to "allow four weeks for your new EIN to be established in our systems before filing your Form 2290", so a new authority should apply for the EIN first.
Does a 2290 extension give me more time to pay?
No. An extension to file has to be requested in writing before the due date and runs up to 6 months, but the tax is still due on the original date.
